What is an antipode?
An antipode is the point on Earth's surface that lies diametrically opposite another location. The two points are connected by an imaginary straight line passing through Earth's centre.
Every location has exactly one geographic antipode. However, the opposite point is often in the ocean rather than on land, because the continents and oceans are unevenly distributed across the planet.
How is an antipode calculated?
The calculation uses the latitude and longitude of the original location.
Latitude: Reverse the sign. A point at 40° north has an antipode at 40° south.
Longitude: Shift the longitude by 180° and express the result within the range −180° to +180°.
For example, the antipode of a location at 40° N, 3° W is approximately 40° S, 177° E.
The result identifies the point directly opposite the selected coordinates. The nearest town or coastline may be some distance away.
