About cities south of the Equator

On the globe, red markers are cities that appear only in the most populous ranking, cyan markers appear only in the southernmost ranking, and gold markers appear in both.

Both rankings use the scope of this database, so cities that are not included cannot appear. Positions are reference coordinates for each place, not city boundaries. Populations are the recorded GeoNames figures, which are not necessarily metropolitan-area totals or current estimates.

Seasons are reversed relative to the Northern Hemisphere: December to February is summer in much of the south, and June to August is winter. Many tropical places south of the Equator are better described by wet and dry periods than by four distinct seasons.

Are these the southernmost cities in the world?
